Sex Is A Forbidden Word

In the Junior Humanities class, Policy we learned about the Legislative branch and how it works. We studied cases in history and how the legislative branch used there power in the matter. We went to a city council meeting and we saw the mayor Rahm Emmanuel. Even though the meeting didn't talk about the topics we wanted, we got to see how issues are brought up and the system they go through. For this Action Project we had to make a persuasive essay about an issue and a legislator that can address the issue. I choose house representative of the distract I live In which is Barbara Currie. My issue was sex offenders. The most challenge thing that happened was finding an issue that I was passionate about, as well as finding a person that could address the issue. I got through these challengers by looking for bills that weren't passed yet. Finding a person that could actuallyadress the issue my teacher suggested using someone that was in my distract so I chose her.

 "Sex offenders" those words can ruin someones life. Remember how you parents always said not to talk to strangers , Yeah sex offenders are the reason why. I would like to talk about having a Sex Offender Registry Task- Force. Ms.Currie this task force would help the people that live in Illinois keep watch for the Sex Offenders. It allows them to get involved, ask questions and give advice to the task force. Children and adults get assaulted everyday but  "approximately 30% of sexual assault cases are reported to authorities.” according to the National U.S Department Of Justice. This force would make it easier for those who have been assaulted to speak up and talk to the task force.
 
  Children are scared they don't know what to do, some don't even know they are being assaulted. Others are told that it is okay and they don't tell the adult. this is why only“62,939 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in 2012” According to the U.S National Department Of Justice. I can’t even imagine how this number has changed now in 2017. Recently, a teenage girl was by taken by her teacher.  He will be charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual misconduct with a minor. To put your child in a place where you think they are safe and they get abducted is shocking to anyone. Even where I live there are there 3 sex offenders within a mile of me.

I am a student at GCE Lab School in Chicago. I am writing to you about the sex offender task force. This task force would help the community as a minor growing up in Chicago, I feel like it is so easy for a child to get abducted especially in my neighborhood where everyone knows each other and trusts each other. I think it would benefit the community to have a task force for the residents so they can keep in contact. This task force would help girls and boy all over Illinois and maybe it can spread to other states.This is the bill maybe be passed would help a lot of people. It is called the HB 5572, It is  in the process of being passed it will discussed January 1, 2018 and the materials will be discussed the same day the next year.  But I think there should be more that the Force does, for example like deciding whether or not the case should be passed on to the police. Having a Sex Offender Task- Force can be a bad thing as well people can use the task force as a way to make false reports. Having a false report is bad because people can be put a person into the registry and they didn't even do anything. People can also use this information as a way to ruin the lives of those that are on this registry as well. To stop these problems, I feel like the registry should only be allowed to see the people on the registry.  As far as false reports the task force should be able to look into the case first before it is brought to the police. Far too often the lives of children and adults are ruined by th , sex offenders. This task force would help with these problems and keep the community involved. I do think that this force should be able to investigate the reports.

“If you let you people into your life a little bit ,they can be pretty damn amazing (Alexie 129) This is a quote from the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian published in 2007 .This book highlights racism, the struggles of going through puberty and death in the family .This book takes place in Reardan, Washington. The main Character, Arnold is 14 year old “Indian” boy who lives on a reservation with his parents ,grandmother, sister and his friend Rowdy. Arnold decides he wants to go to a all white school off the Rez which is “forbidden’ so he is shunned by his best friend and his community. Throughout this book the author has many examples of what Vandana Shiva suggests is “Making peace with diversity” for a sustainable future.

For example, Arnold befriends Roger a racist classmate of his by standing up to him. ”Hey,Chief,” Roger said.”You want to hear a joke?” ““Sure,” I said. “Did you know that indians are living proof that niggers fuck buffalo?” “And I knew I had to do something big. I couldn’t let them get away with that shit. I wasn’t just defending myself. I was defending Indians, black people, and buffalo. So I punched Roger in the face. ( Alexie 64 -65). Arnold proved his worth to Roger by standing up to him in front of Roger’s friends which earns his respect.

In addition, to Roger befriending him. Roger helps Arnold out when he lies to his girlfriend about being rich by giving him money. Which shows that Roger has grew as a person. He is accepting Arnold even asking him to join the basketball team. “Yeah, You’re right, dude. It’s none of my business. Hey man are you trying out for basketball?” “ But the things is, my stomach is all messed up because I,er, forgot my wallet. I left my money at home,man.” “He opened his wallet and handed me forty bucks.” “Roger was the one who guessed you were poor” she said. (Alexie 126-127)

Thirdly, Roger and his teammates defended him when he got concussion from his old friend Rowdy at a basketball game on the “Rez” . This means that Roger not only respect him but values him as a friend enough to defend him.” I jumped into the air,heard the curses of two hundred Spokanes, and then saw only a bright light as rowdy smashed his elbow into my head and knocked me unconscious.” After rowdy knocked me out, both of our teams got into a shoving matches and push- fights.” (Alexie 146).

Lastly, Roger stands up for him after his grandmother dies, he has been gone for a few weeks trying to cope with his lose and he finally returns and his teacher greets him with rude remarks . “Oh class,” she said.” We have a special guest today. It’s Arnold Spirit. I didn’t realize you still went to this school, Mr. Spirit.” “What did you just say?” I asked her “ You really shouldn’t be missing class this much,” she said. “Penelope stood and dropped her textbook.And then Roger stood and dropped his textbook.Whomp! And then the other basketball players did the same” (Alexie 175).

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian was banned . Parents think that the book is inappropriate because it talks about sexual content, it is anti- Christian and the bad language Drugs and alcohol as long as saying it wasn’t meant for kids to read in 2014. 

In conclusion, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian shouldn’t have been banned because this book teaches what it is like to deal with life situations like bullying ,death in the family, and sex. The parents that got the booked banned might not have wanted them to read about but, they would have to learn about anyway in middle and high school. I do not believe that this book is anti - christian because everybody has doubts even in their own religion the main character didn’t say he didn’t believe god. I believe that Alexie is a good writer and I really enjoyed this book, the very first time I read I was going through a rough patch where I didn’t care about school or my work and my family were very worried this book made it better for me because of the humor.

Offensive Images

                                              
All over the world there are offensive media images mostly of women. Another problem is women being under paid compared to men. This issue has been around for a long time. For example in Iceland which is the top country to have settled some of woman’s rights problems, where having there in own problems. In 1975 woman stopped working and they all walked out that was 90% of women in Iceland. These women made Iceland come to a standstill. Later women noticed so many changes when they came back later that night and noticed that their husbands where wore out from watching the kids some even bribed there oldest to watch the children too.

Some countries in the world are trying to widen their job in politics and giving there stereotypically male jobs to women.  Norway in the last couple of years 2013 to be specific appointed a female Prime Minister Erna Solberg.  

 40% of seats in the national parliament are held by women in Norway. And gender distribution in Norway among leaders is 35.7% women and 64.3% is men. These number are improving but not even close to being the end of the problem. The gender gap in the work force between the ages of 20 -66 yrs. old is 82 % man a 77% women in Norway. Iceland is also trying to solve the gender equality by making Women’s participation in the labor market. Also today, women make up 47% of the labor force, compared to 38% in 1970. The gap has narrowed but not disappeared, with women earning close to 80% of men's dollar.

   Norway and Iceland are both trying to fix their gender equality problems. Both have some problems in their country but aren’t even close to accomplishing the goal of everyone being equal no matter what gender or anything because anyone who is qualified can do that job too even if there a woman they should get paid the same. Right?  Iceland is the top country trying to solve gender equality problems. Norway has a female prime minister which makes woman look more respectable because it doesn’t have woman in an inappropriate light in social media.

Norway and Iceland are both trying to get their gender equality issues in control. Iceland is the top country to have some of their gender equality issue fixed or better. while Norway made a female prime minister. There are so many statistic that prove this and that show that they have a long way to go to end in this problem.
The purpose of this assignment was to inform people of the offensive media images and how they contribute to women not being paid fairly in the work force. I learn that women went on strike to show men how much they are needed in this world. the challenge was finding statistic in Norway that  I wanted to use. I am proud of the fact that I did this assignment to the best of
my ability.
